Achieving certification to an internationally recognised management system standard is an important milestone for any organisation. A pre-assessment provides an opportunity to evaluate your management system before the certification audit, helping you identify areas for improvement and better understand your level of preparedness.
Conducted by experienced PJR auditors, a pre-assessment offers an objective review of your management system against the requirements of the applicable standard. It enables your organisation to address potential issues before the certification audit, reducing the likelihood of unexpected findings and helping your team approach the audit with confidence.
What Is a Pre-Assessment?
A pre-assessment is an optional preliminary audit carried out before the formal certification audit. Its purpose is to assess how effectively your management system has been implemented and whether it is aligned with the requirements of the relevant standard.
The duration of a pre-assessment will vary depending on the size and complexity of your organisation but is typically completed over one to three days.
Although a pre-assessment provides valuable insight into your organisation’s readiness, it does not guarantee that all nonconformities will be identified or that certification will be achieved.
Benefits of a Pre-Assessment
A pre-assessment helps your organisation prepare more effectively for certification by providing an independent assessment of your management system.
Key benefits include:
- Identifying strengths and opportunities for improvement within your management system.
- Assessing conformity against the requirements of the applicable standard.
- Prioritising areas that require attention before the certification audit.
- Increasing staff awareness and confidence in the audit process.
- Providing an opportunity to experience the audit process before the certification audit takes place.
- Supporting more effective planning and allocation of resources.
- Helping reduce the likelihood of unexpected findings during the certification audit.
How the Pre-Assessment Works
Before the assessment begins, PJR will agree the scope and objectives with your organisation. If there are specific processes, departments or activities you would like reviewed, these can be included within the agreed scope.
During the pre-assessment, the auditor reviews documented information, interviews personnel and evaluates the implementation of your management system against the requirements of the relevant standard. Where areas of nonconformity or opportunities for improvement are identified, these are documented within the Pre-Assessment Report.
As an accredited certification body, PJR maintains impartiality throughout the assessment. Auditors identify areas where requirements may not be fully met but do not provide consultancy or recommend specific corrective actions.
Following the assessment, you will receive a report summarising the findings, highlighting both strengths and areas requiring attention, together with an overall assessment of your organisation’s readiness to proceed to the certification audit.
What to Expect During Your Pre-Assessment
Opening Meeting
The auditor meets with your management team to confirm the objectives, scope and timetable of the pre-assessment and answer any questions before the assessment begins.
Documentation Review
Documented information, policies, procedures and supporting records are reviewed to assess conformity with the requirements of the applicable management system standard.
Management System Assessment
The auditor evaluates how your management system has been implemented by observing operational activities, interviewing personnel and reviewing objective evidence across the organisation.
Closing Meeting
At the conclusion of the pre-assessment, the auditor presents the findings during a closing meeting and provides a written report summarising areas of conformity, identified nonconformities and opportunities for improvement. Corrective action is not required following a pre-assessment; however, organisations are encouraged to address any findings before proceeding to the certification audit.
