ISO 26262 (Road Vehicles – Functional Safety)
Technology has become so much a part of our lives that we don’t always think about all of the places it exists. For instance – automobiles. There is a lot of hardware and software that goes into things that drivers take for granted, including assistance functions, controls, and most importantly the safety systems. They are things that probably aren’t noticed in the best of times, but if something goes wrong would be sorely missed.
That’s where ISO 26262 comes in. This standard, first published in November 2011, focuses on the development and testing of electrical and electronic systems relating to motor vehicle safety systems. The standard focuses on passenger vehicles that transport fewer than nine people and weigh less than 3.5 tons. This is an international standard used by the United States, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and the United Kingdom and is relevant worldwide. In some cases, automobiles can only be put on the market if their safety systems have been tested according to the guidelines laid out in ISO 26262.
PJR can issue a certificate of conformity to ISO 26262. In addition to hardware and software requirements, the standard includes management system requirements that overlap with ISO 9001-based standards, including IATF 16949. This makes it possible to receive a discount when you combine these two standards in your audit.
