ISO 14001:2026

Environmental Management Systems

ISO 14001 is the internationally recognised standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). It provides organisations with a structured framework to manage environmental responsibilities, reduce environmental impacts, meet applicable legal and other requirements, and support continual improvement.

What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for an Environmental Management System that helps organisations identify environmental aspects and risks, improve environmental performance, reduce waste and resource consumption, and embed environmental management into everyday business operations.

The previous edition of the standard, ISO 14001:2015, has now been superseded by ISO 14001:2026, published in April 2026. While the revised standard maintains the familiar structure of ISO 14001:2015, it introduces clearer requirements and greater emphasis on today’s environmental challenges.

The latest edition reflects the growing importance of climate resilience, sustainable resource management and environmental stewardship, helping organisations address environmental risks while supporting long-term business sustainability.

What’s New in ISO 14001:2026?

The 2026 revision strengthens existing requirements rather than introducing a completely new approach.

Climate Change Requirements

Following the climate change amendment introduced in 2024, climate change considerations are now fully integrated throughout the standard. Organisations are expected to evaluate both how their activities affect the climate and how climate-related risks may affect their operations, supply chains and interested parties.

Greater Focus on Biodiversity and Natural Resources

The revised standard places increased emphasis on biodiversity, ecosystems, water stewardship, resource efficiency and the sustainable use of raw materials, reflecting evolving environmental priorities.

Enhanced Life Cycle Perspective

Requirements relating to life cycle thinking have been clarified, encouraging organisations to consider environmental impacts across the entire life cycle of products and services—from sourcing and design through to disposal or recovery.

Improved Change Management

A dedicated change management requirement has been introduced to help organisations identify and manage environmental impacts before operational changes are implemented. This supports better planning and reduces the risk of unintended environmental consequences.

Stronger Emergency Preparedness

Requirements relating to environmental emergency preparedness and response have been strengthened to improve organisational resilience and readiness for environmental incidents.

Alignment with Other ISO Standards

ISO 14001:2026 continues to follow ISO’s Harmonised Structure, making it easier to integrate with other management system standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 45001 and ISO 50001.

Transition to ISO 14001:2026

The International Accreditation Forum (IAF), together with the ISO Committee on Conformity Assessment (CASCO), is expected to introduce a transition period of approximately three years from publication of the new standard, although the official transition arrangements are still to be confirmed.

PJR UK will continue to monitor official guidance and provide updates as soon as the transition requirements are published. Whether you are seeking initial certification or planning your transition from ISO 14001:2015, our experienced auditors can support you throughout the process.
